Santo Domingo Sundial

Santo Domingo Sundial

The Sundial is an instrument whose origin and use go back to ancient times.  The purpose of these ancient cultures was obviously to measure time and days.  The Sundial works according to the earth movement as it turns around the sun; the sundial marks the time and with the shadow or light movement the gnomon of sundial points the time.

The sundial is an ancient monument with a huge historical and architectonic value.  It was constructed in 1753 by the one-time governor of Santo Domingo Island, Francisco de Rubio and Peñaranda for the officers to be able to check time.

The Sundial of Santo Domingo is preserved in good conditions and since it is in an island where the sun shines everyday, it works perfectly.
This majestic sundial is constructed in cut stones.  It has two faces in two of its four laterals; one of them marks the morning hours and the other face marks the afternoon hours.

The Sundial is one of the few which are still working in the big cities of the world. It is located in Plazoleta del Reloj del Sol, right in front of the Museo de las Casas Reales, at the Colonial Zone.
