If you visit La Isabela Beach, you must be prepared because the zone does no have many services; the beach can be an interesting place to take pictures but remember to take your basic equipment.

La Isabela Beach was the first beach to lodge the European settlement in America. The beach has many trees with shadows and its landscape is ready for tourism; it is a quiet place you can visit taking into account that it is not one of the tourist points per excellence in Dominican Republic.

Punta Rusia Beach is located on Bahía La Isabela, a zone characterized by it majestic beaches of white sand and also for the most rough landscapes of Dominican Republic.

The beach is approximately 280 km from the center of the capital, the tour is very tedious so we recommend you to take a more than one day trip and using good transportation such as the ones offered by the tours offered by Caribe Tours Company.

In Punta Rusia you can enjoy other attractions such as incredible landscapes; there is also the National Park of Montecriti and the molehill called Cayo Arena; there is a little town in the zone called “Pueblito Pesquero” which has houses that seem to have stopped in the time. This place is beautiful for those picture lovers.

Punta Rusia Beach is not deep which is ideal for the family; its extension is enormous; the contrast caused by the majestic evening are worthy to be kept in our memories as well as the rest of beaches of Dominican Republic with its warm weather and waters.

Cayo Arena is one of the places you can not miss; it is just 20 minutes by boat. In Cayo Arena the sea waters are a mixture of green and blue color, the sand is soft and white. The average price of a four people pack from Punta Rusia to Cayo Arena is US$35 per person; this includes transportation and lunch; the company that offers the service is called Cayo Arena Tours and its phone number is 809 656 0020.

Cueva de las Maravillas is located in the eastern part of Dominican Republic. This great cave is 25 meters depth underground. It has 800 meters of extension from which we can have a nice walk on 240 meters deep down the cave and enjoy the natural beauty as well as have an educational touristic experience.

Its former name was Cueva Jagual, until 1949 when its actual name La Cueva de las Maravillas was given.

Within the cave we can appreciate around 500 paints on wall and engravings where black and red colors are predominant; they were made by tainos, ancient inhabitants of the island. This kind of picture is called cave art.

Since it is an underground place, the predominant fauna of this place is the bat but we can also find some reptiles and insects such as the anolis.

The walk through Cueva de las Maravillas lasts around 35 minutes; it is accomplished by groups of 20 or less people addressed by a guide. In order to protect the cave paintings several actions are forbidden: taking pictures (how do I get this …) or video record, using musical devices, throwing garbage inside the cave, scratching the walls (a legal action could be taken because of this); it is recommended to speak in low voice during the tour.

One information we must have in mind is that the cave has an inside elevator to make oldest, children and handicapped people tour easier. Other interesting information is that we must wear comfortable clothes at visiting this place because it is a cave located in a tropical country so the weather is very humid and hot.

Cueva de las Maravillas
Location: San Pedro de Macorís main road – La Romana
Schedule: Tuesdays to Sundays 9:00 A.M – 6:00 P.M (open on holly days)

When we talk about beauty, Saona Island is undoubtedly the best representation of this word meaning. This island is adjacent to Dominican Republic with110 Kms² of territorial extension. It is part of the Eastern National Park and one can only access to it by boat from the shores of Dominican Republic.

The original name of the island was Adamanay called like that by the native inhabitants who lived in Quisqueya, before being called Dominican Republic. Then in 1494 Christopher Columbus changed its name to Savonesa.

A great variety of flora and fauna decorate the island so that everyone visiting the place shall feel in contact with nature. In Saona Island you can visit several caves formerly used as refuges by the native inhabitants The Island offers us kilometers of solitary beaches , with thousand of coconuts trees, white sand and totally crystal waters. It is the perfect place to go and rest, its sunsets are impressive and its landscapes are worthy of a picture.

In Saona Island, the “Natural Swimming Pool” that has this name due to its depth is not more than one meter height, we can find marine species such as starfish, coral reeves and many kind of fishes.

In this island, there is the community of Mano Juan, a fishing community where architecture seems not to have appeared yet, with wooden houses and people making a living out of craft products. It is already a custom to take candies for the children of the community, so don’t forget yours.

There are not hotels in Saona Island; most of the hotels of this Eastern Zone of the Dominican Republic prepare trips to this paradise on earth. The time for the trip will depend on the place of the hotel.

Remember to take your camera, candies, suntan lotion and lots of energy to enjoy this beautiful Dominican spot.

The Gri-Grí Small Lake is located in the Municipality of Río San Juan, a place where tourism is basically unexploited; in this northern zone of the country we can still find virgin beaches and a great variety of first quality hotels.

The Gri-Grí Small Lake was a spring in 1958 that connected a brook to the sea, but in this year an earthquake turned Gri-Gri Small Lake into a touristic point and an attraction nowadays for those lovers of nature. This is one of those worthy trips; it mangrove swamps and the lake shape are really admirable.

The name Gri-Grí was given by the inhabitants of Rio San Juan, due to the great abundance of a tree named Gri-Grí and it was considered the most adequate name.

This small lake is visited everyday by local and foreign tourists. At arriving to the small lake you will find the Boats Association of the community which offers trips on boats that go to this small lake mouth in the sea. It’s an educative trip in which all the small lake details are given and it allows the tourists to understand the importance of this ecological lung of Dominican Republic.

In the waters of this small lake a platform is mounted every year since 1997 in order to celebrate the carnival of this municipality which is unique in its genre in the world because artists who design the costumes and masks are inspired by marine species; it is a great show.

The zone has hotels, drugstores and food places to offer service to tourists. The trip on boat from the lake port and back again last around 30 minutes; if you go to visit Gri-Gri small lake, don’t forget to bring your camera.
